ICGS Akshay commissioned into the Indian Coast Guard at Goa Shipyard

ICGS Akshay commissioned into the Bharatiya Tatrakshak on 27 June 2026 at Goa Shipyard Limited in Goa, the newest Fast Patrol Vessel to join the Indian Coast Guard fleet. Smt. Parama Sen, IA&AS, Additional Secretary (Personnel) in the Department of Expenditure under the Ministry of Finance, formally inducted the ship into service.

The name does the talking. Akshay means indestructible.

Inspector General Bhisham Sharma, PTM, TM, Commander of the Coast Guard Region (West), was on the dais, with Inspector General Jyotindra Singh, TM, Deputy Director General (HRD), alongside him. Officials from the Central and State governments and a team from the shipyard filled out the gathering at the yard.

A Fast Patrol Vessel built in Goa

Goa Shipyard Limited, a defence public sector yard, designed and built the vessel. The Coast Guard tied the build to the Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India programmes and counted it as another indigenous delivery off the slipway.

No displacement, speed or weapons fit was disclosed for the ship. The release stayed silent on numbers.

What ICGS Akshay will do

With ICGS Akshay commissioned, the vessel takes on the standard run of Coast Guard duties: maritime law enforcement, search and rescue, coastal security, marine environmental protection, and aid to mariners in distress. The Coast Guard functions under the Ministry of Defence, and these are the staples of its work along India's coast and across the exclusive economic zone.

Command and crew

Commandant (JG) Deepak Choubey commands the ship. Comdt (JG) Choubey and his crew take the Akshay onto the active list.

Recent inductions from Indian yards

The Akshay joins a busy stretch for Indian shipyards. The Navy's tri-commissioning of Dunagiri, Sanshodhak and Agray at Kolkata came days earlier, INS Sudarshini worked through her Atlantic leg into Baltimore, and a flotilla of Indian warships called at Sattahip in Thailand the same week.
