Indian Army Seychelles Contingent to March at 50th National Day Parade

An Indian Army Seychelles contingent will march at the island nation's 50th National Day celebrations on 29 June 2026, the day Seychelles marks the Golden Jubilee of its independence. Prime Minister Narendra Modi attends as Guest of Honour.

The contingent numbers 32 personnel. They come from the Assam Regiment, and Captain Aryan H Deolekar leads them.

An Indian Navy marching contingent and a military band are taking part alongside it, the official release said. That puts two of India's three services on the parade ground at Victoria for the anniversary, a turnout the two governments have built up over years of defence contact.

Modi travelled to the archipelago on a state visit timed to the anniversary, with India marking fifty years of diplomatic ties to Seychelles this year. The Indian Army Seychelles contingent will be on the parade ground while he watches from the dais.

India and Seychelles go back a long way. The relationship has grown from old historical links into a working partnership that now covers defence, development, culture and trade.

A familiar role on foreign parade grounds

Indian troops have marched at ceremonial events abroad before. The recent list runs to the 237th Bastille Day Parade in France in 2023, the Victory Day Parade in Bangladesh in 2021, and the Victory Day Parade in Russia in 2015 and 2020.

Sending a contingent to a friendly country's national day reads as a marker of trust between two militaries. For India it also feeds a wider claim to being a dependable security partner across the Indian Ocean Region.

Why the Assam Regiment

The Assam Regiment recruits from the eight northeastern states and carries a long ceremonial record at home. Its contingent has been judged best marching unit at the Republic Day parade in Delhi on more than one occasion. Choosing it for an overseas turnout fits that history.

Indian Ocean partnership behind the parade

The defence relationship runs deeper than a single parade. The two armies held the Lamitiye exercise in Seychelles in March, an all-services edition that brought in the Navy and an IAF C-130. Indian warships also work the region's ports through the year, and one is in Seychelles waters for the anniversary.
