Lt Gen Mohit Malhotra Takes Over Jaipur Based South Western Command
Lt Gen Mohit Malhotra, AVSM, SM, has assumed the appointment of General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Jaipur based South Western Command. The Army confirmed the assumption of charge on 01 July 2026 in a Ministry of Defence release.
Lt Gen Mohit Malhotra steps up from Eastern Command
He arrives at Jaipur straight from Kolkata. Until this appointment Lt Gen Malhotra was Chief of Staff at Headquarters Eastern Command, the number two post in a command that holds the Army's eastern theatre. In that role he worked on operational preparedness, organisational functioning and the internal cohesion of the headquarters.
Commissioned into the 47 Armoured Regiment in June 1989, the officer brings more than thirty-seven years in uniform to the appointment. That service runs across command, staff and instructional postings.

A career across the Army's hardest ground
Siachen sits on the list. Lt Gen Malhotra has commanded on the glacier, the highest and coldest battlefield the Army holds, and the spread of his command tenures reaches from there down into the western desert.
He has led an Armoured Regiment, an Independent Armoured Brigade, an Armoured Division and the Desert Corps. That is an armour-heavy record, built in the sand and open country where India fields its strike formations, and it maps onto the ground his new command holds.
His staff profile is wide. Postings have taken in operational planning, military intelligence, operational logistics, personnel management, technology absorption and strategic communications.
The command Lt Gen Mohit Malhotra now holds
South Western Command is the youngest of the Indian Army's operational commands. Raised in 2005 and headquartered at Jaipur, it holds a stretch of the western frontier with Pakistan and fields armoured and mechanised formations built for fast, offensive action across Rajasthan's open terrain, the kind of ground that has driven recent orders such as the Suryastra rocket launcher.
The command also carries a recent line of continuity at the top of the Army. Gen Dhiraj Seth, who took over as the 31st Chief of the Army Staff on 30 June 2026 from Gen Upendra Dwivedi, is himself a former GOC-in-C of the South Western Command.
Scholar-soldier with a King's College degree
Lt Gen Malhotra holds two Master's degrees in Defence Studies, one from King's College, London, and two M Phil degrees, in Political Science and Defence and in Strategic Studies. He topped almost every course he attended.
He is also a graduate of the Advanced Command and Staff Course in the United Kingdom, of the Higher Air Command Course, and of the National Defence College in New Delhi, the run of higher-command qualifications that marks out officers on the Army's senior command track, and the Ministry of Defence set out that record in full when it announced the change of command.
Medals and commendations
For his service Lt Gen Mohit Malhotra has been awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and the Sena Medal. He has also earned several commendations from Army Commanders and from the Chief of Army Staff.
