Gallantry awardees railway travel benefits have moved onto a digital footing. Recipients of the Sena Medal, Nau Sena Medal and Vayu Sena Medal for gallantry, along with their spouses and the parents of unmarried posthumous awardees, can now register online for lifetime train travel under a paperless process, the Indian Army said on Wednesday.

Under the scheme, eligible beneficiaries travel free for life in First Class, Second AC and AC Chair Car across Indian Railways. The entitlement covers the medal recipients themselves, their spouses, described in the government's wording as widows or widowers until remarriage, and the parents of unmarried posthumous awardees. The Army's post credited the arrangement to a Ministry of Defence sanction and framed it as recognition of the courage, sacrifice and service of gallant soldiers and their families.

Sena Medal, Nau Sena Medal and Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry) sit below the Kirti Chakra and Shaurya Chakra in the country's peacetime gallantry order of precedence, awarded across the Army, Navy and Air Force for individual acts of courage. The travel benefit itself was first sanctioned in early 2026, well before Wednesday's portal announcement. Earlier reporting had it that the Government approved the benefit in March, extending to the awardees a facility already available to holders of higher gallantry decorations, and that the travel entitlement includes one companion alongside the awardee.


How the digital registration works

The registration process was built to run entirely online and without paperwork, the Army said, in keeping with the Ministry of Defence's sanction. Eligible beneficiaries can register through the Indian Railway Concession Card Portal, referred to by its acronym IRCCP.

e-Passes and IRCTC booking from November 1

Following authentication on the portal, e-Passes will be generated online for beneficiaries whose eligibility has been confirmed. Ticket booking against those e-Passes will run through the IRCTC web portal, with the facility commencing from 1 November 2026, according to the Army's announcement. No interim arrangement was mentioned for travel before that date, so awardees applying now will need to wait out the gap.

Where this sits in the wider veterans welfare framework

This railway travel benefit is one strand in a broader set of measures for veterans and gallantry award recipients that run through the Department of Ex-Servicemen Welfare.
