The Sarang Helicopter Display Team has arrived at El Alamein, Egypt. The Indian Air Force confirmed the team's arrival on Monday, ahead of its participation in the second edition of the El Alamein International Airshow.

The show runs from 08 to 10 September at El Alamein International Airport, hosted by the Egyptian Ministry of Defence alongside the Egyptian Air Force, the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the Egyptian Space Agency and EgyptAir. A dedicated conference precedes the flying and static display days on 07 September.

What the Sarang Helicopter Display Team will fly

Sarang flies the indigenously designed and manufactured Advanced Light Helicopter, the ALH Dhruv, built by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. The team's routine is built around close formation flying, with aircraft holding tight, mirrored positions through loops and rolls that leave little room for error.

It bills itself as the world's only helicopter aerobatic display team, a claim resting on the ALH Dhruv's aerobatic clearance, a capability few production helicopters carry anywhere.


An indigenous platform on an international stage

The ALH Dhruv's presence at a foreign airshow doubles as a marketing moment for HAL and for Aatmanirbhar Bharat more broadly. The helicopter has already been exported to several countries and flies with the Ecuadorian, Mauritian and Nepalese militaries.

That export record gives the Egypt outing a live audience of potential future customers, not just airshow crowds.

The Indian Air Force tagged the Ministry of Defence, the Integrated Defence Staff, the Indian Embassy in Cairo and the Egyptian Air Force's spokesperson's office in its announcement, alongside the airshow's own organisers.

The pairing signals that this visit sits inside a broader thread of India Egypt defence contact rather than standing alone as a one-off cultural stop. India and Egypt have widened defence engagement in recent years across joint exercises, high-level visits and industry outreach, and an airshow appearance gives that relationship a public, non-technical face.

A team built for the international circuit

The Sarang Helicopter Display Team has flown at airshows and events abroad for over two decades. It remains a fixture of the flying display programme at Aero India at Yelahanka as well, alongside its overseas dates.

Its formation aerobatics have become one of the more recognisable calling cards of Indian military aviation abroad, distinct from the fixed-wing routines flown by the Air Force's Surya Kiran team. The IAF has kept up a steady overseas presence through 2026, with Rafales flying at Exercise Pitch Black in Darwin and fighters deployed to Malaysia for Exercise Udara Shakti earlier this year.
