INS Sudarshini Livorno arrival brought the Indian Navy's sail training ship into Italy on Wednesday, the latest port call of the ongoing transoceanic expedition Lokayan 2026. The ship sailed in from the Mediterranean after her stop in Barcelona, Spain, earlier this month.

The deployment has now covered more than 17,400 nautical miles across ten countries since it set out.

The Italy stop follows a Mediterranean crossing in which the ship left Spanish waters and worked north toward the Ligurian coast. IDW's earlier report on the Barcelona departure covered the previous leg of the same passage.


A passage exercise with ITS Palinuro in the Mediterranean

En route to Livorno, INS Sudarshini conducted a Passage Exercise with the Italian Navy's own sail training ship, ITS Palinuro.

Coordinated manoeuvring and sail handling drills

The joint evolution involved coordinated manoeuvring and sail handling drills between the two ships. It gave the crews of both vessels a chance to interact and exchange professional expertise, a format the ship has followed before, including the passage exercise conducted with the Portuguese Navy off Sagres earlier in the voyage.

Livorno and the Accademia Navale connection

Livorno is home to Italy's Accademia Navale, the country's naval academy, and the port call opens a channel for further professional engagement between the two navies. The Indian Navy frames Lokayan 2026 as advancing MAHASAGAR, Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions.

Cross deck visits and an open ship for the port call

The ship will remain open to visitors through the duration of the call.
