India Kenya defence cooperation returned to the spotlight in New Delhi on Tuesday, as the Commander of the Kenya Air Force held back to back meetings touching on aviation medicine, joint training and drones.

Defence Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh received Maj Gen Bernard Waliaula, Commander of the Kenya Air Force, at the Ministry of Defence in the capital. The conversation covered what officials described as the full gamut of the bilateral defence relationship.

Aviation medicine, bilateral Air Force exercises, joint manufacturing and training all featured, part of what officials framed as advancing India Kenya defence cooperation across multiple fronts. Both sides also exchanged views on counter-terrorism and on the emerging role of drones and counter drone systems in modern warfare, an area flagged as a shared priority.


Kenya Air Force commander calls on the Chief of the Air Staff

Maj Gen Waliaula also called on Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, the Chief of the Air Staff, at Air Headquarters during the same visit. The Indian Air Force said the interaction reaffirmed a shared commitment to strengthening cooperation and enhancing interoperability between the two forces.

The Air Force described the meeting as reinforcing closer engagement and enduring ties between the two services.

An Air Force career spanning three continents' staff colleges

Maj Gen Waliaula holds staff and command qualifications from institutions in China, the United States and Kenya, according to the Air Force's own description of his career, and carries Kenyan honours recognising his service.


Counter-terrorism and the drone question

The counter-terrorism and drone discussions arrive as the Indian Air Force builds out its own counter drone posture at home. The service is set to bring domestic manufacturers to the Pokhran range in Jaisalmer next week for Dronathon 2026, an exhibition built around surveillance, autonomous operations, swarm technologies and electronic warfare.

Neither statement detailed specific platforms, timelines or a joint programme on drones, leaving the substance of that cooperation to future engagements.

Where Kenya fits India's Africa defence engagement

The Maj Gen Waliaula visit adds Kenya to a widening list of African militaries the Ministry of External Affairs and the defence establishment have hosted in recent months, from an inaugural Joint Defence Committee with Zimbabwe to a call by the Ivory Coast Air Force's chief of staff on the Defence Secretary and the Chief of the Air Staff in July.

Tuesday's talks followed the same pattern, pairing a Defence Secretary level review with a separate call on the Air Force leadership.
