Mangrol ASW SWC delivery to the Indian Navy took place on Friday, with Cochin Shipyard Limited handing over the third of eight Mahe class anti submarine warfare shallow water craft it is building for the service. Indigenous content on the vessel runs beyond 80 percent.

The handover was marked by a signing ceremony at the yard in Kochi.

Mangrol ASW SWC delivery completes the third of eight craft

Mahe, the lead ship of the class, was delivered on 23 October 2025 and commissioned at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai a month later. Malvan followed as the second unit, delivered on 31 March this year and commissioned at INS Kadamba, Karwar, on 22 July. Mangrol now becomes the third, arriving under a year after the class entered service.

Built for the shallow water hunt

The design brief covers underwater surveillance, anti submarine warfare operations in coastal waters and low intensity maritime operations, with mine warfare folded in as a further task.

Waterjets, torpedoes and the sensor fit

Mangrol runs on waterjets, with torpedoes, anti submarine rockets and mines in its kit, backed by radars and sonars.

A name recovered from Gujarat's coast

The ship takes its name from Mangrol, a coastal town and minor port in the Junagadh district of Gujarat that serves as a hub for the marine fishing industry. It also carries forward an older name. An earlier INS Mangrol, a Naval minesweeper, served until its decommissioning in 2004.


Aatmanirbhar Bharat and the shipbuilding line

The Navy has framed the Mangrol ASW SWC delivery as part of its indigenous shipbuilding push under Aatmanirbhar Bharat. Cochin Shipyard is building eight of the sixteen craft in the class, with the rest coming from Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers.

The older Abhay class corvettes, in service since the late 1980s, are being phased out as the Mahe class craft join the fleet.

Indian Navy, Cochin Shipyard Limited and Ministry of Defence officials attended the handover.

Malvan's commissioning at Karwar in July and the launch of Machilipatnam days later showed the class moving on two tracks at once, with deliveries, commissionings and launches for later hulls all running in parallel. The Navy's ASW push this year also carried into the RIMPAC 2026 sea phase, where an Indian officer led the anti submarine warfare command for the first time.
