The Rajnath Singh Operation Safed Sagar message reached Netflix's premiere screening in New Delhi by video on Thursday, after the Defence Minister was unable to attend in person. The series, built around the Indian Air Force's role in the 1999 Kargil War, opens on the platform on Friday. Singh's message was one of three ministerial and service voices at the event that evening, alongside the Minister of State for Defence and the Chief of the Air Staff, in a room full of the country's senior military leadership.

Singh told the gathered cast and crew that the series had revived memories of the war and honoured the way the Indian Air Force changed its course. Until 1999, he said, no air force in the world had conducted combat operations at altitudes between 15,000 and 18,000 feet, and the series had preserved that courage for a new generation.

He named the people he was congratulating: producers Sanjay Routray, Sarita Patil, Abhijeet Singh Parmar and Kushal Shrivastava, director Oni Sen, and Netflix's Ted Sarandos and Monika Shergill.

A Chief of the Air Staff who calls it a turning point

Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh was more direct about what Kargil meant for his service. Air forces everywhere, he said, had never before flown bombing runs at 16,000 to 18,000 feet the way the IAF did that summer. There was plenty of literature on the subject already, he added, but not much of it had reached the wider public, and a series like this could change that for audiences well beyond India, he said, calling the opening episode alone a sign of what was still to come.

The screening also carried a note of scale from ACM Amar Preet Singh. Netflix has described the series' focus as the Golden Arrows, one of several air, army and naval units that took part in the wider operation, and he made the same point himself, noting the show tells a single squadron's story out of many that fought that summer.

Officers who filled the guest list

The premiere drew a wide spread of the country's senior military leadership. Chief of Defence Staff General NS Raja Subramani, Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Krishna Swaminathan and Chief of the Army Staff General Dhiraj Seth were all present, alongside former Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa.

Sarita Singh, president of the Air Force Wives Welfare Association, attended too, as did Alka Ahuja, widow of Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja, who was killed in the war the series depicts, and whose family gave the writers hours of their time during research for the project.

Netflix's biggest India production yet

Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos used the moment to mark ten years of the platform's presence in India, calling the premiere one of the clearest expressions of that decade-long journey. Operation Safed Sagar, he said, is Netflix India's biggest and most ambitious production yet, and has contributed more than US$24 million, over Rs 215 crore, to the Indian economy.

Oni Sen directs a series created by Abhijeet Singh Parmar and Kushal Srivastava, produced by Sanjay Routray and Sarita Patil of Matchbox Shots and Mehboob Pal Singh Brar of Feel Good Films. It was reportedly filmed across several active IAF stations, a first for an Indian streaming production, built on extensive consultation with Air Force veterans. The cast is led by Siddharth and Jimmy Shergill, with Abhay Verma, Dia Mirza, Prajakta Koli, Adil Hussain, Mihir Ahuja, Taaruk Raina, Arnav Bhasin and Amrita Bagchi rounding out the ensemble cast.

The name on the series is the IAF's own wartime codename. Pakistani troops had occupied Indian posts above Dras, Kaksar, Batalik and the Mushko Valley by May 1999, and the Air Force backed the Army's Operation Vijay with reconnaissance, close air support and precision strikes, much of it flown at altitudes no combat aircraft had reached before. The National War Memorial's own account of Operation Vijay still calls it a saga of unparalleled courage and sacrifice.

The anniversary of that victory has carried its own commemorations this year, from the Shaurya Vijay Yatra motorcycle expedition that rode to Dras, to the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas commemoration held there, where General Dhiraj Seth paid tribute at the war memorial on his first visit as Army chief.

Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth, who represented the ministry in person, called the series a powerful portrayal that would inspire the next generation. Watching the armed forces on screen, he said, would push children toward serving the nation themselves.
