BEML Limited, formerly Bharat Earth Movers Limited, is a Bengaluru-headquartered public sector company that supplies high-mobility trucks, armoured recovery vehicles and other defence-mobility equipment to the Indian armed forces, alongside major civilian businesses in metro rail and mining and construction equipment. A Mini-Ratna Category-I Defence PSU under the Ministry of Defence, BEML is best known in the defence sector for its licence-built Tatra-based military trucks, which form the backbone of India's missile-transport, artillery-towing and logistics fleets.

History

BEML was incorporated in May 1964 as Bharat Earth Movers Limited, with early Soviet assistance, to manufacture rail coaches and mining and earthmoving equipment for India's core infrastructure sectors. The company entered the defence-mobility business in 1986 through a collaboration with Czechoslovakia's Tatra for high-mobility, all-terrain military trucks, rolling out its first heavy-duty trucks for the Indian Army in 1988. Over the following decades BEML expanded this line into a broad family of multi-axle defence vehicles while continuing to grow its rail and mining businesses, and the company was renamed BEML Limited to reflect its diversified product range.

Defence mobility products

BEML's defence portfolio is built around Tatra-derived high-mobility vehicles in 4x4, 6x6, 8x8, 10x10 and 12x12 configurations, used to tow and transport artillery, carry the Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher and missile systems, and haul strategic loads of up to around 33 tonnes. The company also builds armoured recovery vehicles, bridge-laying systems, tank-transportation trailers, mine ploughs and crash fire tenders, and has supplied several hundred high-mobility vehicles and thousands of trailers and military wagons to the armed forces. Indigenisation of the once entirely imported Tatra platform has risen sharply over the years, with BEML citing local-content levels of around 97 percent on its current-generation high-mobility trucks, and the company also manufactures 8x8 vehicle platforms and heavy-duty trailers under recent Ministry of Defence contracts supporting the K9 Vajra-T self-propelled howitzer programme.

Rail, metro and mining businesses

Beyond defence, BEML is one of India's principal suppliers of metro rolling stock, having delivered more than 2,000 metro coaches to systems including Delhi, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Jaipur and Mumbai, alongside railcoaches, electric multiple units and railway track-laying equipment for Indian Railways. Its mining and construction equipment division manufactures hydraulic excavators, bulldozers, wheel loaders, dump trucks, motor graders and other heavy machinery used in opencast and underground mining. In FY 2025-26 BEML reported record consolidated revenue of around ₹4,351 crore, up from about ₹4,022 crore the previous year, with defence contributing roughly a quarter of turnover and an order book supporting continued growth across all three business verticals.
