The India Morocco JDC meeting was held for the first time on Tuesday, giving the two countries a standing institutional platform for defence engagement in New Delhi. Joint Secretary (International Cooperation) at the Ministry of Defence, Amitabh Prasad, co-chaired the talks with the Chief of the 2nd Bureau of the Moroccan Royal Armed Forces, Brig Gen Abdellah Athmani.

Both sides covered a wide sweep of areas: training and education, peacekeeping operations, joint military exercises, medical cooperation, cyber defence and the defence industrial sector. The two delegations agreed to expand cooperation as ties build toward 2027, the 70th anniversary year.

The committee traces its origin to a Memorandum of Understanding on defence cooperation signed between the two countries during Defence Minister Rajnath Singh's visit to Morocco in September 2025, according to the Ministry of Defence.

That agreement gave fresh momentum to the bilateral defence relationship and laid down the institutional mechanism under which the Joint Defence Committee now operates, intended to function as a regular forum where the two sides can review ongoing initiatives and chart new ones across the full range of defence-related activity. Tuesday's meeting was its first outing since the framework was put in place.


Wide-ranging Indian delegation reflects the scope of talks

The Indian delegation brought together officers from the Department of Defence, the three Services, Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff, the Department of Defence Production, the Directorate General of the Armed Forces Medical Services, the Defence Research and Development Organisation and the Ministry of External Affairs.

That breadth of representation lines up with the range of subjects on the table, echoing the delegation makeup seen at India's inaugural Joint Defence Committee meeting with Kuwait earlier this year.

A pattern repeated across India's outreach

Defence diplomacy of this kind has become a recurring feature of India's outreach to African and West Asian partners over the past year, with similar inaugural committee meetings held with other nations in the region, including the India-Zimbabwe Joint Defence Committee, as New Delhi builds out a wider network of institutional defence ties. A visit to India last year by Ivory Coast's air force chief followed a similar pattern of expanding defence contacts across the continent.

Part of a broader push under Aatmanirbhar Bharat

India's defence industrial cooperation with Morocco has been building for some time. A Tata Advanced Systems Limited facility in Morocco, inaugurated in 2025 to manufacture the indigenously developed WhAP 8x8 wheeled armoured platform, remains among the more visible markers of that partnership, one that Aatmanirbhar Bharat has increasingly turned into a template for engagement with African militaries.

The India Morocco JDC meeting adds a formal government-to-government layer to that industrial track, giving both sides a dedicated channel to align policy alongside the commercial ties already taking shape.

Building toward the 70th anniversary

With 2027 marking seven decades of diplomatic relations between India and Morocco, Tuesday's meeting was framed on both sides as an early step in what officials expect to be a fuller calendar of engagement over the coming year. No date for the next JDC session was announced.
