INS Sudarshini New York Arrival Puts the Tricolour on the Hudson
INS Sudarshini New York arrival came on 4 July 2026, when the Indian Navy's sail training ship entered the Port of New York and New Jersey to represent India at the United States International Naval Review 250 and the Sail4th 250 celebrations. The three-masted barque took her place in the Parade of Sail on the Hudson River, the tricolour flying from her rigging against the Manhattan skyline.
She is a tall ship built for teaching. Cadets learn the old craft of working canvas and line aboard her, and on this passage they are doing it an ocean away from home.
INS Sudarshini New York visit follows Norfolk and Baltimore
The New York call closes the American leg that opened in Virginia. Sudarshini joined the Sail250 events at Norfolk from 19 to 23 June, sailing in the Parade of Sail and the City Crew Parade alongside tall ships from other navies. She then moved up the coast to Baltimore, reaching the Maryland port on 26 June after a passage through the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal and under the mid-Atlantic bridges.
At Baltimore the crew walked in the city parade for Sail250 Maryland, and the ship hosted India's ambassador to the United States and the state's lieutenant governor. From there she set course for New York, where she is now berthed at Brooklyn for the Sail4th 250 celebrations.
A voyage that began at Kochi
Lokayan 2026 is the reason she is in American waters at all. The Indian Navy sent Sudarshini out from Kochi on 20 January on a ten-month transoceanic deployment, a plan that runs to roughly 22,000 nautical miles across 18 ports in 13 countries. More than 200 naval and coast guard cadets are aboard for sail training over the course of it.
Where Lokayan 2026 has sailed
The early legs took her through the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea to Salalah in Oman and Safaga in Egypt, then through the Suez Canal to Valletta. She called at Sete in France for the Escale a Sete festival, at Las Palmas in the Canary Islands, and at Mindelo in Cape Verde before the Atlantic crossing that brought her to Antigua and on to the United States. The Press Information Bureau logged each of those port calls as the voyage went.
Sail4th 250 and the American anniversary
Sail4th 250 and the wider Sail250 programme mark 250 years of American independence. The celebrations run across a string of ports, Norfolk, Baltimore, New York, Boston and New Orleans, drawing tall ships, naval vessels and aircraft from many countries. India's entry in that fleet is Sudarshini.
The INS Sudarshini New York port call keeps her in the harbour through the Sail4th 250 window before the expedition moves on.
Maritime diplomacy under sail
The Navy puts Lokayan 2026 forward as an exercise in reaching out, building goodwill and working with partner navies while carrying India's seafaring tradition abroad. The Baltimore and New York calls are part of a broader run of Indian naval activity overseas this year, from the Eastern Fleet's recent visit to Thailand to the RIMPAC contingent now in Hawaii, and the deepening naval work with partners such as Japan.
The Embassy of India in the United States posted images of the ship entering the Port of New York and New Jersey. The post from India in USA is on X here: https://x.com/IndianEmbassyUS.
Sudarshini stays on the American east coast for now, with Boston next on the Sail250 calendar.
