Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) is the primary production agency that turns missile systems designed by India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) into series-manufactured weapons for the Indian Armed Forces. Its portfolio spans surface-to-air missiles, anti-tank guided missiles, air-to-air missiles, torpedoes and cruise-missile sub-systems, produced across its Hyderabad-region and Visakhapatnam units, making it the country's principal missile-production house.

Akash and Astra

The Akash weapon system is a medium-range, quick-reaction surface-to-air missile capable of engaging aerial targets at ranges of roughly 25-30 kilometres and altitudes up to about 18,000 metres. BDL manufactures the missile and associated ground systems in coordination with a wide base of DRDO and private-sector supply-chain partners, and Akash batteries equip both the Indian Army and Indian Air Force, with export variants also cleared for friendly foreign countries. BDL has also been licensed by DRDO to produce the Astra, an indigenous beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile intended for fighter aircraft such as the Su-30MKI and the indigenous Tejas, marking the company's expansion from ground-launched systems into airborne weapons carried at high speed and altitude by combat aircraft.

Anti-tank guided missiles

Anti-tank missiles form BDL's oldest product line, dating to its first licensed production of the French SS-11B1 in the 1970s. At its Bhanur unit, BDL manufactures the Konkurs-M and Invar (3UBK20) wire- and laser-guided anti-tank missiles under Russian licence, along with their launchers and test equipment. The Kanchanbagh unit produces the Milan-2T anti-tank guided missile, developed under a long-standing collaboration originating with French and German designs, together with its Milan launchers. BDL has additionally worked on indigenous third-generation ATGM designs, including the Amogha family and production support for DRDO's Nag missile, reflecting a gradual shift from licensed foreign designs toward home-grown systems developed jointly with DRDO.

Torpedoes and underwater weapons

At its Visakhapatnam unit, BDL manufactures the heavyweight and lightweight torpedoes developed by DRDO's Naval Science and Technological Laboratory, including the Varunastra heavyweight torpedo used by Indian Navy surface ships for anti-submarine warfare. This unit gives BDL a presence in underwater weapons alongside its traditional land- and air-defence missile lines, broadening the company's role across all three armed services and diversifying its manufacturing base beyond guided missiles alone.

BrahMos and cruise-missile components

Beyond its own missile lines, BDL contributes to the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile programme, a joint venture between India and Russia, by manufacturing structural and sub-system components that feed into final integration by BrahMos Aerospace. This participation reflects BDL's broader role as a manufacturing hub within India's wider missile-industrial ecosystem, working alongside DRDO laboratories, BrahMos Aerospace and private-sector suppliers rather than only producing complete, stand-alone missile rounds.

Through this combination of legacy licensed lines and newer DRDO-designed systems, BDL's missile-manufacturing activity underpins a large share of the guided-weapon inventory fielded by India's Army, Navy and Air Force, and continues to grow as new missile programmes move from development into series production.
