Beyond individual weapon systems, DRDO organises its research across broad technology domains that feed multiple programmes at once. This domain-based structure lets advances in one area, such as materials or electronics, be reused across aircraft, missiles, ships and land systems developed by different laboratories.

Aeronautics and unmanned systems
DRDO's aeronautics laboratories cover fighter aircraft design, flight control systems, aero-engines and unmanned platforms. The Tejas programme, run through the Aeronautical Development Agency in partnership with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, remains the flagship effort, alongside continuing work on the twin-engine Tejas Mk2 and the fifth-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft. The Aeronautical Development Establishment has produced a range of unmanned aerial vehicles, from early reconnaissance platforms to newer autonomous and swarm-drone technologies aimed at future combat needs, while the Gas Turbine Research Establishment continues indigenous aero-engine development through the long-running Kaveri programme.
Armaments and electronics
Armaments laboratories develop artillery systems, ammunition, small arms and armoured platforms such as the Arjun tank, working closely with propellant and explosives specialists at facilities such as HEMRL, Pune, to improve range, accuracy and lethality. In electronics, DRDO's radar and communication laboratories have progressively indigenised systems once imported wholesale, producing the Rohini and Rajendra series of ground and weapon-locating radars, the Uttam AESA radar for fighter aircraft, secure military communication equipment, and networked air defence control systems such as Akashteer that link sensors and shooters in real time.
Naval systems and life sciences
For the Navy, DRDO laboratories develop sonar, underwater sensors, torpedoes and ship-based electronic warfare systems, supporting both surface combatants and submarines, alongside work on unmanned underwater vehicles for surveillance and mine-countermeasure roles. A separate life sciences cluster, including laboratories in Delhi focused on physiology and bioengineering, addresses the human side of defence technology, researching high-altitude and extreme-climate physiology, combat rations, protective clothing and medical countermeasures for soldiers deployed in demanding terrain such as Siachen and the high Himalayas.
Materials and emerging technologies
Materials science underpins nearly every other domain, with DRDO laboratories developing lightweight composites for aircraft, ballistic-resistant armour and ceramics for personal and vehicle protection, and high-energy materials for propulsion and warheads. In recent years the organisation has also expanded into emerging technology areas, including artificial intelligence, quantum technology, hypersonic systems and directed-energy weapons, through its Young Scientists Laboratories and cross-cutting research programmes intended to keep pace with global defence innovation.
Across all these domains, DRDO's approach is to mature a technology in the laboratory before handing it to a defence public sector undertaking or private manufacturer for production, a pipeline that has let India progressively reduce reliance on imported systems in aeronautics, electronics, armaments and naval equipment over the past few decades.
