DRDO carries out its research and development work through a distributed network of specialised laboratories and establishments, each focused on a particular technology domain. Rather than a single campus, the organisation operates from cities across India, allowing individual laboratories to build deep expertise while feeding designs into a common weapons-development pipeline for the armed forces. The network has grown steadily since 1958, when DRDO began with only a handful of laboratories inherited from the Defence Science Organisation and the Indian Army's technical development units.

Missile and strategic systems laboratories

DRDL is the lead laboratory for missile design and integration, responsible for the Agni and Prithvi families among other strategic systems, while the adjoining RCI specialises in missile guidance, avionics and seeker technology. A third Hyderabad establishment, the Advanced Systems Laboratory, handles propulsion and airframe structures for long-range missiles. Together, these laboratories form the backbone of India's ballistic and cruise missile programmes, and also support the BrahMos Aerospace joint venture with Russia on propulsion and guidance technology.

Aeronautics and electronics laboratories

ADA, formed specifically to steer the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft programme, works alongside ADE, which develops unmanned aerial vehicles, flight control systems and aeronautical structures. LRDE designs ground, airborne and naval radars, including the Rohini and Rajendra series and the indigenous Uttam active electronically scanned array radar developed for Tejas, while DEAL in Dehradun focuses on electronic warfare and tactical communication systems.

Combat vehicles, naval and materials laboratories

CVRDE designed the Arjun main battle tank and continues to develop armoured platforms, working alongside GTRE, which develops gas turbine aero-engines, including the indigenous Kaveri engine programme, and the Vehicles Research and Development Establishment in Ahmednagar, which works on wheeled and tracked military vehicles. On the naval side, the Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory in Kochi develops sonar and underwater sensor systems, while HEMRL in Pune develops propellants, explosives and pyrotechnics used across missiles, ammunition and rocket systems.

Life sciences and emerging technology

A separate cluster of laboratories, including the Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences and the Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences, both in Delhi, works on soldier health, high-altitude physiology, combat rations and protective equipment. The five DRDO Young Scientists Laboratories, spread across several Indian cities, were created to bring younger scientists into frontier fields not covered by the legacy laboratory network.

Each laboratory typically partners with academic institutions, defence public sector units and, increasingly, private industry to move a design from prototype to fielded system, with DRDO Headquarters in New Delhi coordinating budgets, programme reviews and technology transfer across the network.
