The Doval Han Zheng meeting took place in Beijing on Tuesday, hours before National Security Advisor Ajit Doval was due to co-chair the 25th round of Special Representatives talks on the India China boundary question with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Doval, India's designated Special Representative on the boundary question, called on Han Zheng, Vice President of the People's Republic of China, during the two day visit he began on Monday at Wang's invitation.

The Embassy of India in Beijing said the two discussed ways to strengthen peace and tranquility in the border areas and to further improve bilateral relations across economic, political and multilateral fora, in accordance with the consensus reached between the leaders of the two countries.

What the Doval Han Zheng meeting covered

No further detail was released beyond the broad framing of peace along the border and cooperation across economic, political and multilateral platforms. The language keeps the boundary question and the wider relationship on separate tracks, a distinction both capitals have leaned on since ties began stabilising after the 2020 standoff.

Han Zheng holds no military rank. He is the Vice President of the People's Republic of China.

A day of coordinated diplomacy in Beijing

The courtesy call came hours before the main event of Doval's visit, the 25th round of the Special Representatives dialogue with Wang Yi, confirmed a day earlier when Doval reached Beijing on his two day trip. The pairing of a Han Zheng courtesy call with an SR round is not new. Han called on Doval in Beijing around the 23rd round in December 2024, an event the Ministry of External Affairs recorded at the time.

The Special Representatives channel since 2003

The mechanism was set up in 2003 to work toward a settlement of a boundary running some 3,488 kilometres. Tuesday's round was its 25th sitting, following the 24th in New Delhi in August 2025, when Doval and Wang Yi co-chaired the dialogue in the Indian capital. The Beijing round also comes weeks after India and China held the 36th round of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on border affairs in New Delhi on 6 August, feeding technical detail on delimitation and trans-border rivers up to the Special Representatives.

Border stability and the wider calendar

Ground conditions along the Line of Actual Control have held since the eastern Ladakh disengagement, sustained by daily military contact and the parallel border management mechanisms both sides have built up over the past two years.

Ahead of a possible Xi Jinping visit

The Doval Han Zheng meeting and the SR round both run weeks before the BRICS summit India hosts in New Delhi on 12 and 13 September, an event Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to attend, though neither government has confirmed his participation.

A visit would open the way for a second Modi Xi meeting in a year, after the two leaders last met on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Tianjin in 2025. Doval and Wang Yi have now met twice in 2026, first at the BRICS security advisers meeting in New Delhi in June and again at Tuesday's round in Beijing.
