The Garud sniper rifle RFI issued by the Indian Air Force asks industry for a high power .50 BMG platform to replace the Galil rifles its special forces have carried for years, according to the terms of the Request for Information reviewed by India Defence Wire. The document seeks a weapon chambered in the 12.7x99mm cartridge, built for a role well beyond the anti-personnel sniping the Galils were bought to do.
The Galils in service now reach out to roughly 800 metres.
A .50 BMG rifle changes that arithmetic by a wide margin. The round was designed for the Browning M2 machine gun and has been adapted into long-range sniper systems for decades precisely because it carries enough energy to stay lethal, and accurate, at distances an assault-pattern rifle cannot touch. For a Garud team working from a standoff position, that difference is the entire point of the RFI, and it is why the requirement was written around a heavy machine gun cartridge rather than a conventional sniping round.
Why the IAF wants a Garud sniper rifle RFI in .50 BMG
Extended range against personnel is only half the brief.
The RFI frames the weapon as an anti-materiel system as much as a sniper rifle, meant to put lightly armoured vehicles, radar sets, communication equipment and other unarmoured or lightly protected targets within reach of a two-man team rather than a strike aircraft or an artillery battery. That is a capability few Indian special forces units currently hold in a dedicated, purpose-built form.
A genuine anti-materiel rifle in this calibre would put the Garuds among a small group able to disable a parked helicopter, a radar dish or a soft-skinned vehicle from well outside the range of most weapons likely to be fired back at them. It shifts what a two-man sniper team can achieve on its own, without waiting for air support or artillery to be tasked against the same target.
The optics and suppression the Garud sniper rifle RFI demands
The system the IAF wants is not just a barrel and a stock. The RFI calls for a sound suppressor to cut the weapon's signature on clandestine operations, a day telescopic sight, and a thermal imaging scope for use in low-light and complete darkness.
The thermal requirement is deliberate. Image intensifier night vision needs at least some ambient light to work, and struggles badly on a moonless night under heavy cloud cover. A thermal scope reads heat rather than light, so it keeps functioning in exactly the conditions where conventional night vision devices degrade or fail outright.
Ammunition built for more than one job
The specification list for rounds runs long: armour-piercing, armour-piercing incendiary, armour-piercing incendiary tracer, armour-piercing explosive incendiary, and saboted light armour penetrator. Each does a slightly different job against a slightly different target, from punching through light armour plate to setting fuel or stored ordnance alight at the point of impact, and the tracer variant gives a spotter a visible reference for follow-up shots.
The same specialised rounds double as a tool for Explosive Ordnance Disposal work too. A rifle that can detonate an unexploded device from several hundred metres out lets an EOD team clear it without ever walking up to the thing themselves, which is precisely the safer-distance logic the RFI leans on when it lists these rounds as a firm requirement rather than an option left open to the vendor to skip.
The force this rifle is meant to arm
The Garud Commando Force was raised in 2004 to guard IAF bases and installations from the kind of attack that had already exposed gaps at Indian airfields. It has not stayed a static base-protection unit since.
Counter-insurgency operations, combat search and rescue, special reconnaissance and missions abroad have all become part of its brief over two decades since, layered on top of the original mandate of securing critical air force assets against a ground-based terrorist threat in the years after it was first raised.
Arming that mission set with a genuine anti-materiel capability cuts Garud teams loose from air support or artillery when they work independently in hostile territory, especially where the target is equipment rather than a person.
Part of a wider push on Garud equipment
The sniper rifle is not an isolated purchase, and it did not arrive first. The Ministry of Defence and the IAF have been running parallel efforts to re-equip the Garuds in recent months, including a separate push for man-portable loitering munitions with a minimum range of 40 km and a choice of warheads, and for high-altitude micro UAV systems built to keep working in extreme conditions.
Read together with the IAF's separate push to build out its own medium-altitude UAV fleet, the pattern is one of a force trying to give its special operators independent long-range strike, reconnaissance and precision engagement options that do not run through a fighter squadron every time.
The Garud sniper rifle RFI sets out no quantity and no procurement timeline, and does not name a preferred vendor. That is standard at this stage under the Defence Acquisition Procedure, where an RFI is used to survey what industry can offer before a formal Request for Proposal narrows the field. Responses from manufacturers will be assessed before the IAF decides whether, and how, to carry the requirement forward.
