The Airbus C-295 is a medium tactical transport aircraft selected by the Indian Air Force (IAF) to replace its veteran fleet of Avro HS-748 aircraft, many of which had been in service for nearly six decades. India signed a contract with Airbus Defence and Space in September 2021 for 56 aircraft, marking the first military aircraft programme in India to involve a private-sector final assembly line. The C-295 was selected after a lengthy competition, edging out rivals including the Embraer C-390 Millennium, following years of delay in a transport-aircraft replacement effort first initiated in the mid-2000s under an earlier public-private partnership model that was eventually abandoned.

The Tata-Airbus Partnership

Under the contract, the first 16 aircraft were delivered in flyaway condition directly from Airbus's facility in Seville, Spain. The remaining 40 aircraft are being manufactured and assembled in India by Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL), with deliveries scheduled through the early 2030s. The programme is structured to transfer manufacturing know-how progressively, with local content rising from roughly 48 percent on the earliest India-assembled aircraft to around 75 percent on the later units in the production run.

Vadodara Final Assembly Line

TASL established a dedicated Final Assembly Line (FAL) for the C-295 at Vadodara, Gujarat, the first facility in India where a private company has set up and operated a complete military aircraft assembly line. The Vadodara facility rolled out its first India-assembled C-295, which subsequently completed its maiden flight, a milestone marking the practical start of indigenous production. Several thousand individual parts and sub-assemblies are being sourced from Indian micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) spread across multiple states, building a domestic supply chain around the programme, though major systems such as engines, avionics and landing gear continue to be sourced from established international suppliers. The programme is expected to catalyse a wider aerospace component manufacturing ecosystem in Gujarat and neighbouring states, with TASL and its supplier network positioned to compete for future military and civil aerostructure contracts beyond the C-295 itself.

Capabilities and Role

Designed for tactical airlift, the C-295 combines a pressurised cabin with a rear cargo ramp, enabling paratroop drops, cargo delivery and casualty evacuation alongside routine troop and equipment transport. Its short-field performance allows operations from unpaved or elevated airstrips, a significant advantage for supplying forward bases along India's mountainous northern borders and its island territories. The type is intended to replace the IAF's ageing An-32 and HS-748 fleets in the tactical transport role, while also offering potential for maritime patrol and electronic warfare variants in future. Its modern digital cockpit, weather radar and updated communications and navigation suite bring the IAF's tactical airlift capability up to current standards, replacing the largely analogue systems of the Avro fleet it succeeds.

By combining an established European tactical transport design with a dedicated Indian assembly line, the C-295 programme is positioned as a template for future defence manufacturing collaborations in India, extending beyond aircraft delivery into long-term domestic industrial capacity.
