Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) is India's foremost defence electronics public sector undertaking (PSU), headquartered in Bengaluru, Karnataka. Established in 1954 in collaboration with the Government of India to build a domestic base for professional-grade electronics for the armed forces, BEL has grown into a multi-unit, multi-product conglomerate that today equips the Indian Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and paramilitary forces with radars, electronic warfare (EW) systems, communication equipment, command-and-control networks, sonars, weapon systems and electro-optics. Origins and growth

BEL was set up in the mid-1950s with initial technical assistance to manufacture communication and radar equipment for India's defence services, reducing dependence on imports. Over subsequent decades it expanded well beyond its original Bangalore complex, adding manufacturing units at Ghaziabad, Pune, Machilipatnam, Chennai, Kotdwara, Panchkula, Taloja and Hyderabad, among other locations, each specialising in particular product lines such as radars, tank electronics, telecommunications or components. This distributed manufacturing footprint allowed BEL to scale production while embedding regional supply chains for the wider defence-electronics ecosystem.

Product portfolio

BEL's catalogue spans several hundred products across land, air and naval domains. It manufactures a wide range of indigenous and DRDO-designed radars, including 3D surveillance and weapon-locating systems; electronic warfare suites for jamming and signal intelligence; secure military communication and networking equipment; Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Intelligence (C4I) systems; sonars and underwater sensor suites for the Navy; electro-optic fire-control and surveillance devices; and gun and tank electronics upgrades. BEL is also the lead systems integrator for the indigenous Akash surface-to-air missile system, supplying its radars, launchers and command centres.

Civilian and export role

Beyond defence, BEL is India's principal manufacturer of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) used in national and state elections, a role it has held since the late 1980s alongside fellow PSU Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL). It also produces civilian electronics for sectors such as telecommunications, homeland security and space. BEL has steadily expanded exports of radars, communication systems and the Akash missile system to friendly foreign countries, supporting the government's push for indigenous defence manufacturing and export growth under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

As one of India's largest defence public sector enterprises by revenue and order book, BEL continues to be central to the country's self-reliance goals in electronics-heavy defence systems, working closely with DRDO laboratories, the armed forces and private industry partners on next-generation radar, electronic warfare and network-centric warfare technologies.
