The Arjun is India's indigenously designed main battle tank, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) through its Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE) in Chennai. Conceived as a modern replacement for the Indian Army's older Soviet-origin tanks, the Arjun distinguishes itself among contemporary MBTs by retaining a rifled main gun rather than the smoothbore guns common on Russian and Western designs, and by incorporating locally developed composite armour. It is manufactured by the Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF) at Avadi, Tamil Nadu.

Development

Design work on the Arjun began in the 1970s-80s and continued for over two decades, with the configuration finalised by the mid-1990s after protracted trials and repeated revisions to meet Army requirements. The programme faced lengthy delays and criticism over cost and schedule overruns, but the tank eventually entered service in 2004, when the first production vehicles were handed over to the 43rd Armoured Regiment. An order for 124 Arjun Mk-1 tanks was completed over the following years, giving the Army its first fully indigenous main battle tank.

Variants: Mk-1 and Mk-1A

The baseline Arjun Mk-1 introduced the tank's 120mm rifled gun, Kanchan composite armour and a modern fire-control system. Building on user feedback, DRDO subsequently developed the Arjun Mk-1A, incorporating more than 70 improvements covering firepower, mobility, protection and surveillance, including upgraded armour packages, an improved fire-control suite, containerised ammunition stowage and a higher share of indigenous content than the Mk-1. The Ministry of Defence placed an order worth over ₹7,500 crore for 118 Mk-1A tanks with HVF Avadi, with deliveries continuing through the mid-2020s to re-equip additional armoured regiments.

Capabilities

The Arjun's 120mm rifled gun can fire a range of indigenously developed ammunition, including armour-piercing fin-stabilised discarding sabot (APFSDS) and high-explosive squash head (HESH) rounds, and is paired with a computerised fire-control system incorporating a laser rangefinder and thermal imaging for engagement in low visibility. Its layered composite armour, developed at the Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory, is designed to defeat both kinetic-energy and chemical-energy threats, while a hydropneumatic suspension gives the tank a comparatively smooth ride and stable gun platform across varied terrain, particularly the desert and semi-desert sectors for which it was optimised.

Service

The Arjun equips a small number of armoured regiments, concentrated in the desert terrain of Rajasthan and Gujarat where its weight and dimensions are less constraining than in other sectors. Despite a production run far smaller than the T-72 or T-90 fleets, the tank has remained a symbol of India's push toward self-reliance in armoured vehicle design, and continuing Mk-1A deliveries are expected to expand its footprint within the Army's armoured corps over the coming years.

Beyond the baseline gun tank, DRDO has explored further derivatives of the Arjun platform, including bridge-laying and recovery variants intended to support armoured formations operating the type, though these have progressed more slowly than the main gun-tank programme. A self-propelled howitzer built on the Arjun hull, known as the Arjun Catapult, was also trialled but did not proceed to production, with the Army instead selecting other artillery systems for that requirement. Looking further ahead, lessons from the Arjun programme, including its indigenous armour, gun and fire-control technology, are expected to feed into India's broader Future Ready Combat Vehicle effort, even though the FRCV itself is being pursued as a separate, lighter design better suited to a wider range of terrain than the Arjun's home ground in the desert sector.
