Drone swarm technology refers to groups of small unmanned aerial vehicles that coordinate autonomously, using artificial intelligence and mesh networking, to conduct surveillance or saturate a target with simultaneous loitering-munition strikes. The Indian Army first demonstrated this capability publicly in January 2021 and has since worked with domestic technology firms and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited to develop swarm systems intended to overwhelm enemy air defences at a fraction of the cost of manned strike aircraft.

The 2021 demonstration
At the Army Day parade in Delhi in January 2021, the Indian Army flew a coordinated formation of 75 drones that used automated target recognition and swarming algorithms to attack a set of simulated targets in kamikaze-style strikes, with the aircraft networked to operate collectively rather than under individual manual control. The event was the first large-scale public demonstration of swarm autonomy by the Indian armed forces and was developed in partnership with NewSpace Research and Technologies, a Bengaluru-based robotics and autonomy company.
ALFA-S and the Combat Air Teaming System
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, again working with NewSpace Research and Technologies, has since developed ALFA-S (Air-Launched Flexible Asset - Swarm) as part of its broader Combat Air Teaming System (CATS), which also encompasses unmanned "loyal wingman" aircraft intended to operate alongside crewed fighters. ALFA-S is designed to be released from a carrier aircraft in pods, each capable of dispensing up to 24 small autonomous drones that then coordinate as a swarm to locate and strike air-defence radars and other high-value targets, aiming to saturate defences that would otherwise threaten a single strike aircraft.
Indigenous ecosystem
Swarm development in India has drawn on a growing base of domestic robotics and autonomy start-ups working alongside the Army, DRDO and public-sector defence firms. In 2026, the Army announced an expanded, indigenously framed "sovereign swarm warfare" initiative intended to further develop autonomous swarming capability, control architectures and counter-swarm defences using domestically owned technology rather than foreign components, consistent with the government's broader indigenisation and Positive Indigenisation List policies for unmanned systems.
Operational rationale
Swarms are attractive militarily because a large number of small, low-cost drones operating together can overwhelm layered air defences designed to counter a smaller number of expensive manned aircraft or missiles, while the loss of individual drones in a swarm does not compromise the mission. India's own experience defending against hostile drone waves, including Pakistani Bayraktar TB2 drones intercepted by the indigenous Akashteer air-defence system during Operation Sindoor in May 2025, has reinforced the case for developing both offensive swarm capability and matching counter-swarm defences in parallel. Swarming also allows planners to distribute sensors and munitions across many airframes instead of concentrating them in a single expensive aircraft, reducing the operational and financial cost of any single loss.
As ALFA-S and related programmes mature from demonstrators toward fielded systems, swarm technology is expected to become an increasingly significant element of India's unmanned combat inventory, complementing larger platforms such as TAPAS-BH-201 and the MQ-9B rather than replacing them.
