TAPAS-BH-201 is a medium-altitude long-endurance (MALE) unmanned aerial vehicle developed by the Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), a Bengaluru-based DRDO laboratory, for long-range intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. Previously known as Rustom-II, the programme is India's most ambitious attempt to build a domestically designed MALE drone comparable to imported platforms such as the IAI Heron, and after a long development period it has moved from a DRDO-led mission-mode project to industry production.

Development history

TAPAS-BH-201 first flew on 16 November 2016 at Challakere in Chitradurga district, Karnataka, as an evolution of the earlier Rustom-H design. The aircraft has a length of about 9.5 metres and a wingspan of roughly 20.6 metres, configured for extended-duration flight at medium altitude. Development stretched over more than a decade as engineers worked to meet the altitude and endurance figures set out in the armed forces' Joint Services Qualitative Requirements (JSQRs). In January 2024, the Ministry of Defence formally closed TAPAS-BH-201 as a DRDO mission-mode project after it fell short of the 24-hour endurance and 30,000-foot ceiling specified in the JSQRs, having demonstrated around 18 hours and 28,000 feet in flight trials. Rather than being abandoned, the programme was reorganised in October 2024 into an industry-led production model, with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and Bharat Electronics Limited taking on manufacturing responsibility from DRDO.

New engine and ongoing trials

A key focus of the post-2024 programme has been fitting TAPAS-BH-201 with an indigenously developed turbocharged engine of about 180 horsepower, replacing an imported powerplant and raising the aircraft's indigenous content toward roughly 80 percent. Ground runs and taxi trials of the re-engined aircraft began in 2025, with a first flight on the new powerplant planned as a precursor to final user-evaluation trials, the last formal step before the type can be inducted into frontline service.

Planned induction

The armed forces have indicated a requirement for around 76 TAPAS-BH-201 aircraft in the initial phase, split roughly 60 for the Army, 12 for the Air Force and 4 for the Navy. Early production orders, including an initial batch of ten aircraft and a further four for naval evaluation, have already been placed even as development trials continue, reflecting the services' intent to induct the type once outstanding performance gaps are closed.

Capabilities and role

TAPAS-BH-201 is designed to carry a modular payload of electro-optical/infrared sensors, synthetic aperture radar and electronic-intelligence equipment, controlled through a satellite-linked ground control station capable of operating multiple aircraft. Once inducted, it is intended to reduce the armed forces' dependence on imported Heron and Searcher UAVs for medium-altitude ISR, providing a domestically sustained platform whose maintenance, upgrades and spares are not subject to foreign supply constraints. The programme has also been tracked closely by defence analysts as a benchmark for how quickly India's public and private aerospace industry can absorb a complex, DRDO-originated UAV design and carry it through to volume production.

Although its path to service has been longer than originally envisaged, TAPAS-BH-201 remains DRDO's flagship MALE UAV effort and a test case for India's ability to translate indigenous drone research into an operationally credible platform. Its progress, alongside the parallel MQ-9B acquisition, will shape how far India can reduce reliance on imported ISR drones over the coming decade.
