Pralay is a short-range, quasi-ballistic surface-to-surface missile developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) as a battlefield support weapon for the Indian armed forces. Unlike India's longer-range Agni-series ballistic missiles, which are oriented towards strategic deterrence, Pralay is a tactical system intended for conventional precision strikes against high-value targets such as command centres, radar installations, airstrips and troop concentrations.

Development
Pralay evolved from DRDO's earlier Prahaar short-range missile programme, adapting a similar airframe and propulsion base into a weapon with a quasi-ballistic flight profile and a manoeuvring re-entry vehicle. Flight tests began in the early 2020s, with successive trials validating range, guidance accuracy and warhead performance; DRDO subsequently announced the completion of the test programme, clearing the way for induction, with the missile positioned as a mass-producible tactical strike system rather than a strategic one.
Quasi-ballistic flight profile
Unlike a conventional ballistic missile, which follows a largely fixed, predictable parabolic trajectory after its boost phase, Pralay flies a comparatively low, depressed trajectory within the atmosphere and is capable of limited in-flight manoeuvres. This profile is intended to complicate interception by enemy ballistic missile defence systems, which are typically optimised to track and engage missiles following conventional ballistic paths, giving Pralay a survivability advantage despite its relatively short range.
Capabilities and intended role
With its combination of high accuracy, a range of interchangeable conventional warheads and a manoeuvring, hard-to-intercept flight path, Pralay is intended to give the Indian Army and Air Force a rapid, precise conventional strike option against time-sensitive and hardened targets close to the border, without recourse to strategic nuclear-capable systems. It is expected to form part of India's emerging rocket force structure, complementing existing systems such as BrahMos, Prahaar and Agni-Prime, and providing a dedicated tactical-range capability distinct from the strategic deterrence role of the main Agni series.
Strategic significance
Analysts have noted that Pralay's induction reflects a broader shift in Indian military planning towards dedicated conventional precision-strike capabilities that do not carry the escalatory implications of nuclear-capable systems, allowing for more calibrated responses in a limited-conflict scenario. Its road-mobile, canisterised design also allows for rapid deployment and redeployment, complicating enemy targeting and enhancing survivability in a contested border environment.
Comparison with Prahaar and Agni-Prime
Pralay occupies a distinct niche between DRDO's earlier Prahaar demonstrator, which was never inducted, and the longer-range Agni-Prime. Where Prahaar validated short-range solid-fuel and guidance technology, and Agni-Prime provides a nuclear-capable medium-range option, Pralay is purpose-built as a conventional, high-volume tactical weapon that field commanders could employ against battlefield targets without the strategic implications attached to nuclear-capable systems, giving India a graduated set of response options across the range spectrum.
As series production proceeds, Pralay is set to become a core component of India's short-range strike inventory, filling a niche between long-range artillery and rocket systems on one hand and the country's strategic ballistic missile force on the other.
