Akash is a medium-range, mobile surface-to-air missile (SAM) system developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to provide area air defence against aircraft, helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles. Developed under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme, it has been progressively upgraded into a family of variants, including Akash-NG and Akash Prime, and became India's second missile system after BrahMos to be exported, with a battery delivered to Armenia in 2024.

System components
A standard Akash battery comprises multiple self-propelled launchers, each carrying several missiles, a battery-level tracking and fire-control radar named Rajendra, and a command post that coordinates engagements. The Rajendra radar, a passive phased-array system, can track multiple targets simultaneously and guide several missiles at once, giving each battery a degree of multi-target engagement capability uncommon in systems of its generation.
Variants
- Akash: the original system, inducted by the Indian Air Force in the mid-2000s and the Indian Army from 2014, with a range of around 25-30 km
- Akash-1S: an upgraded version incorporating an indigenous active seeker to improve accuracy against manoeuvring targets
- Akash Prime: a variant optimised for high-altitude, low-temperature environments and fitted with an improved active radio-frequency seeker for better performance against low-radar-cross-section targets, developed with Himalayan border deployment in mind
- Akash-NG (New Generation): a substantially redesigned, more compact and lighter variant with a canisterised launcher, faster reaction time, extended range, and improved resistance to saturation attacks by multiple simultaneous threats
Capabilities and operational role
Akash is designed to defend vulnerable areas and points, such as airbases, command centres and troop concentrations, against air attack, functioning as a medium-range layer within India's broader integrated air defence architecture alongside shorter-range systems such as the Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile (QRSAM) and longer-range imported systems such as the S-400. Its indigenous radar, command-and-control and, in later variants, seeker technology have made it a flagship demonstration of DRDO's air-defence design capability, and multiple regiments have been raised for deployment along India's western and northern borders.
Exports
In November 2024, Bharat Electronics Limited delivered the first Akash Weapon System battery, in a configuration tailored for Armenia, as part of a broader Armenian procurement of Indian-made air-defence and artillery systems. The sale marked Akash's emergence as an export product following BrahMos, and further interest has been reported from countries including the Philippines, Vietnam and Egypt, positioning Akash as a central plank of India's growing defence export ambitions.
Place within India's air-defence network
Akash sits in the middle tier of India's layered air-defence network, above short-range point-defence guns and man-portable systems, and below long-range systems such as the imported Russian S-400 Triumf. This layered approach is designed so that no single type of aerial threat, from low-flying drones to high-altitude aircraft and cruise missiles, can penetrate Indian airspace unchallenged. Continued indigenous upgrades to the Akash family are intended to reduce reliance on imported long-range systems over time and extend the network's coverage using domestically produced radars and missiles.
Combining an indigenous radar, missile and command system into a single integrated package, Akash illustrates the maturation of India's air-defence industry from an IGMDP-era development project into an operationally proven and internationally marketed weapon system.
