The Indra series is a family of surveillance radars developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) through the Electronics and Radar Development Establishment (LRDE). Among India's earlier indigenous ground-based radars, the Indra programme played an important role in building domestic expertise and in providing air-surveillance coverage for the armed forces during a period when India relied heavily on imported systems. Its place in the country's radar story is best understood as foundational rather than headline-grabbing.
The name Indra has been applied to more than one radar in the family. Early versions were 2D surveillance radars that provided range and bearing on aerial targets for low-level air defence, giving warning of aircraft attempting to penetrate at low altitude where terrain and the curvature of the Earth can mask a target from higher-altitude radars. Later development extended the concept towards three-dimensional coverage, adding height information to the picture and improving the ability to hand off targets to weapon systems that need a full position in space, not just a bearing.
Role and capabilities
As surveillance radars, the Indra systems were designed to detect aircraft and provide early warning to air-defence units, buying the precious minutes needed to bring weapons to readiness. Mounted for mobility, they could be deployed to fill gaps in radar coverage and to support the Indian Army and Indian Air Force in detecting incoming threats along vulnerable approaches. By feeding target data to command posts and weapon systems, they formed part of the layered detection network that underpins air defence, in which multiple sensors of different types combine to build a fuller picture than any one could achieve alone.
Production of the radars drew on India's defence electronics industry, with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) involved in manufacturing. The programme helped establish the design, integration and production practices that India would later apply to far more complex systems, and it gave a generation of engineers practical experience of taking a radar from concept to fielded equipment.
Legacy
The significance of the Indra series lies less in any single radar than in the foundation it laid. Designing surveillance radars, building antennas and processing radar returns to reject clutter and hold a stable track are skills that do not appear overnight, and the experience gained fed directly into the more advanced systems that followed. The lineage runs through phased-array fire-control radars such as the Rajendra radar and, later, active electronically scanned array designs, and even into the long-range tracking work behind ballistic-missile defence.

Understanding the Indra programme helps explain how a nation with limited initial expertise built, step by deliberate step, the capacity to design world-class radars, learning from each generation of equipment and applying those lessons to the next. In that sense the series is less a single product than a chapter in a longer story of accumulating national capability.
