The Indian Navy is the maritime branch of India's armed forces and one of the larger blue-water navies in the world, tasked with safeguarding a coastline of over 7,500 kilometres and a vast exclusive economic zone across the Indian Ocean Region. Operating under the Ministry of Defence, it combines aircraft carriers, destroyers, frigates, corvettes and submarines with a modern naval air arm, and has shifted steadily toward warships designed and built in Indian shipyards.

Commands and organisation

The Navy is organised into three principal commands, each headed by a Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief. The Western Naval Command, based in Mumbai, oversees operations in the Arabian Sea and hosts a large share of the surface fleet and submarine arm. The Eastern Naval Command, headquartered at Visakhapatnam, covers the Bay of Bengal and is home port to India's ballistic missile submarines. The Southern Naval Command, based at Kochi, functions mainly as the Navy's training command, running establishments such as the Indian Naval Academy at Ezhimala. A separate tri-service Andaman and Nicobar Command, with substantial naval representation, guards the eastern approaches to the Indian Ocean.

Fleet and capabilities

The surface fleet is built around two operational aircraft carriers, a growing line of stealth guided-missile destroyers and frigates, and Kamorta-class anti-submarine corvettes. Frigate strength rests on the Shivalik and Nilgiri (Project 17/17A) classes and older Talwar-class ships, while a network of offshore patrol vessels and fast attack craft handles coastal and exclusive-economic-zone patrol duties. The submarine arm blends conventional diesel-electric boats of the Kalvari, Sindhughosh and Shishumar classes with the indigenously developed Arihant-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines, giving India a sea-based leg of its nuclear deterrent. Naval aviation operates MiG-29K carrier-borne fighters, P-8I Poseidon long-range maritime patrol aircraft, and MH-60R and Kamov helicopters for anti-submarine warfare, airborne early warning and utility roles from both carriers and shore bases, alongside a growing fleet of indigenous ALH Dhruv helicopters and unmanned aerial systems for surveillance.

Indigenous shipbuilding

Successive shipbuilding plans under the Make in India initiative have made Indian yards the primary source of new warships. Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders in Mumbai, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers in Kolkata, Cochin Shipyard and Goa Shipyard Limited between them build the bulk of the Navy's destroyers, frigates, corvettes and submarines, with dozens of ships and submarines typically under construction or on order at any given time. This domestic focus has been central to reducing dependence on imported platforms while building design and engineering capacity within the country, with private shipyards increasingly contributing alongside the traditional public-sector yards.

Role in the region

Beyond deterrence and warfighting, the Indian Navy carries out anti-piracy patrols in the Gulf of Aden, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions after cyclones and tsunamis, and hydrographic surveys for regional partners. It regularly takes part in bilateral and multilateral exercises such as Malabar, Varuna and Milan, and maintains a near-continuous forward presence of mission-based deployments across the Indian Ocean's key choke points and shipping lanes. This combination of deterrence, disaster response and partnership-building underpins its role as a first responder and net security provider across the Indian Ocean Region.
